The Makings of a Smoothie Bowl

IMG_5357With the recent increase in popularity of the renowned Smoothie Bowl, I felt like it was time I tried out my own. So here goes…

It wasn’t much different from making a normal smoothie, the only difference was, instead of pouring it into a glass,  you pour it into a bowl. It felt a little unusual, eating a drink from a bowl with a spoon, but surprisingly satisfying. Like eating soup, it felt just like a meal, and I had trouble finishing it, even though it’s the same smoothie I make regularly; it’s all about tricking the mind.

I treated the smoothie bowl just like a fridge cleaner, using all the fruit I wasn’t eating and were getting a bit old. The ingredients for the smoothie included:

  • Papaya
  • Red Grapes
  • Frozen Mango
  • Frozen Blueberries
  • Banana
  • Kale
  • Almond Milk
  • Handful Trail Mix
  • 3 Prunes
  • 1 Tsp Chia Seeds
  • 1 Tsp Mixed Nut Powder
  • 1 Tsp Protein Powder

IMG_9523For the toppings it was important to keep the lines straight, so I started with Chia Seeds, as they were easier to sprinkle on. Try and sprinkle them evenly and as straight as possible, as it’s easier to build out from there.

For mine, after the Chia Seeds, I used Nut Powder, and then Cacao Nibs; then added the Blueberries.

This is what I did for my smoothie bowl, but you may prefer to add some different flavours; it’s great to add a pop of colour, a superfood aspect and a filling base, such as the protein powder, that makes it more of a meal.

No Boat Like a PawPaw Boat

So I was stuck with a fridge full of fruit and at a loss of what to do with it (apart from smoothies). So what better to do than make up a papaya boat!?

To make this pawpaw boat, I scooped out the seeds of half a pawpaw and added:

  • Green, red and purple grapes13199445_1116953228367685_1110163394_o
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Pear
  • Trail mix (nuts and dried fruits)
  • Dates
  • Cocoa nibs
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

The aim of the boat is to fit everything in, and there isn’t a lot of space, so put minimal amounts of each ingredient. The lemon juice is added for extra flavour, and keeps the fruit fresh, especially if you’re making it for later. Remember, this is just a guideline, so just add the fruits that you like or have to much of.

A Little Chia Pudding and Smoothie Mason Jar

I decided to make this delicious chia pudding and smoothie jar at about 2am last night, in a moment of inspiration. I left the chia to set overnight, so it had a more pudding texture by the morning, and then made the smoothies fresh.

To make the chia pudding:

  • Put 5-6 tablespoons of black chia seeds in a jar
  • Add 1 cup of almond milk (or any milk you prefer)
  • Add a sweetener to taste (e.g. honey, coconut sugar)
  • Stir or shake well
  • Let sit for at least 30 mins
  • Keep checking consistency – if it seems too water, just add more chia seeds

Making the blueberry smoothie13149872_1113119935417681_152470834_n

  • You will need a strong blender!!
  • Add 1 frozen banana
  • Handful of blueberries
  • Cup of almond milk
  • 3 prunes
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa nibs
  • 1 teaspoon of nut powder
  • 1 teaspoon of protein powder (optional)
  • Blend, and spoon gently into the mason jar, on top of the chia pudding
**ensure chia pudding is set before doing this

Making the kale smoothie

  • Put the mason jar in the freezer while you do this part, so it doesn’t get too soft
  • Add 1/2 a banana
  • 2-3 kale leaves
  • 3/4 cup of almond milk
  • Blend, and spoon very gently on the top of blueberry smoothie
  • For garnish add blueberries around the rim and cocoa nibs in the middle

Hope you enjoy making this at home. Its so yummy, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
